A The Rope And The Colt
B Concerto Pour Guitare
by Scott Walker & André Hossein
Released: April, 1969. Label: Philips
The Rope and The Colt is the theme song from Robert Hossain’s 1969 arthouse Spaghetti Western Un Corde, Un Colt. It starred Hossain, Michele Mercier and Daniel Vargas. Critic and Moviedrome presenter Alex Cox wrote in the film journal, Film Comment, that it “holds its own against art westerns like Once Upon a Time in the West and El Topo”.
The theme song was written as part of the score by Hossain’s father, composer Andre Hossain. It features prominent backing vocals and a horn section, and Walker as a protagonist seeking “the man who killed my friend”, who “swore a vow on my dying breath/To ride a trail that ends in death”. The music was used prominently for the cinematic trailer.
The B-side, Concerto Pour Guitare (Scene d’Amour), is an instrumental performed by André Hossein, with no contribution from Walker. The single was released in France.
