Vox Lux

Original Score by Scott Walker
Released: December 14, 2018. Label: Columbia

Vox Lux is Scott Walker’s third soundtrack album, and his final release, three months before his death. Working again with director Brady Corbet, for whom he scored his debut film, The Childhood Of A Leader, Walker composed, arranged and produced eight orchestral, electronic and instrumental tracks, while Australian pop singer-songwriter Sia created the songs for the film’s central character, played by Natalie Portman.

The film is about a school-shooting survivor who becomes a young pop star, is subjected to the demands of the industry, and has a breakdown before the film’s final twist. “For Scott, especially, the themes were evident to him,” Corbet said to Dazed and Confused magazine’s Nick Chen in 2019.

Corbet’s next film, The Brutalist, won the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival, and won three Academy Awards and three Golden Globes. The end credits opened with a dedication: “In memory of Scott Walker”.

“Scott and Brady were soulmates on so many artistic levels. They adored each other. Brady gave Scott absolute licence to do his thing. In those two films, I think Scott saw a route to making music at the sort of level and scale that he really wanted in his heart. Had he still been around today, I think he would’ve moved further into soundtracks”
