Lines is The Walker Brothers’ twelfth single. The piano-led title track of their fourth album, it was written by American singer-songwriter and producer Jerry Fuller, who in the previous decade had written the UK no. 1 and US no. 2 single Young Girl for Gary Puckett and The Union Gap and Travelin’ Man for Ricky Nelson. Fuller had a minor US hit with his own orchestrated version of Lines in 1979. Its lyrics spoke of a man leaving town, trying to find “peace of mind… And now I must stand free / But there’s nobody here but me”.

The upbeat B-side, First Day, was written by John Walker under the pseudonym A. Dayam, a name he had also used on the group’s previous single, No Regrets.

Scott Walker and Geoff Calver produced both sides of the single, which did not chart.
