A Woman Left Lonely is Scott Walker’s sixth solo single, issued to promote his ninth solo album, Stretch, which came out in November. Written by Dan Penn and Spooner Oldham, who also wrote Cry Like A Baby for the Box Tops, the song had previously been released on Janis Joplin’s posthumous album Pearl, and as a single by country singer Charlie Rich. Walker’s version was produced by Del Newman, who the same year arranged strings for Elton John’s Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and conducted George Martin’s score for Paul McCartney and Wings’ Live and Let Die.

Newman also produced the single’s B-side, Where Love Has Died, which also featured on Stretch. It was written by country singer Jim Owen, who also wrote songs for Loretta Lynn, Conway Twitty and Porter Wagoner.

A Woman Left Lonely did not chart.
