The Me I Never Knew is Scott Walker’s fifth solo single, released to promote his new album, Any Day Now. Both A-side and B-side are written by John Barry and Don Black, co-writers of hit movie themes Born Free, Thunderball and Diamonds are Forever. The Me I Never Knew is Walker’s cover of the movie theme from 1972’s Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland, with lyrics about new feelings that the narrator “had not discovered”, that another person “uncovered”. Peter Knight arranged the orchestral accompaniment, and John Franz produced.

The B-side, This Way Mary, was Walker’s version of the theme from the 1971 film, Mary, Queen of Scots. It was previously issued as the lead single from Walker’s 1972 album, The Moviegoer, produced by John Franz, and arranged by Robert Cornford.

The Me I Never Knew did not chart.
